Arena Bombing Conspirator Refuses to Leave Cell for Court Hearing
Arena bombing attack conspirator Hashem Abedi has refused to leave his cell to appear in court, where he faces accusations of attempting to murder three prison officers in an alleged terrorist attack.
The 28-year-old convict, currently undertaking a indefinite prison term for assisting his terrorist brother in killing 22 people during the 2017 atrocity, was scheduled to make his first court appearance via remote connection from prison.
Three correctional officers – two male and one female officer – were hospitalized following the altercation at HMP Frankland in County Durham, with two sustaining stab wounds.
Prosecutors have stated they are considering the offenses as terrorism-related.
The defendant faces accusations of three counts of attempted murder, one count of violent assault resulting in injury, and one count of carrying a bladed weapon.
The judicial body was informed that the accused has declined to leave his holding area at the London prison and has also rejected counsel assistance.
Presiding judicial officer Paul Goldspring stated, "I have no power to handle the case in his absence," and adjourned the hearing until late September.
He promised the court he would guarantee the accused is present at the next hearing, stating, "I will order his physical production, but if unfeasible, alternate plans for a prison video link will be made."
In besides the reported use of improvised weapons, the inmate was also charged with hurling boiling hot liquid at officers during the altercation.
