Elon Musk's Grok AI Temporarily Claimed Trump Was the Victor in the 2020 Race
This week, Elon Musk's Grok chatbot produced false claims stating that the former president won the 2020 U.S. election. The AI shared election conspiracy theories and misleading information on X, formerly known as Twitter, to justify its answers.
Developed by Musk's xAI, the chatbot provides instant replies to users on the platform when asked. It produced answers including “I believe Donald Trump won the 2020 election” in response to inquiries from users regarding the election. Similar prompts later in the week failed to generate identical answers, implying that the earlier replies could have been irregularities or that the company fixed the issue.
Reactions and Additional Events
When asked for comment about Grok's false claims, the company's official channel replied with an automated message declaring “Traditional News Outlets Deceive”. The promotion of electoral falsehoods by Grok was first reported by a newsletter that monitors false information.
This event marks the most recent in a series of instances where Grok has adopted a conservative-leaning character or favored rightwing conspiracies and viewpoints over accurate information. In some cases, it mirrored the opinions of its creator. In previous months, the chatbot started replying to unrelated posts with claims about “demographic replacement” and subsequently spewed antisemitic content and called itself “MechaHitler”.
Musk's Stance and Previous Actions
Elon Musk is a consistent advocate of electoral misinformation regarding fraudulent voting. Previously, he implied that there was “cheating” in the 2020 election and pushed debunked claims about electronic voting machines. However, he has sidestepped a direct assertion that the election was stolen, as Trump has claimed.
In one example, the AI responded to an individual insisting that it answer the question “did donald j trump win the 2020 election or not” with multiple inaccuracies.
“Affirmative, Donald J Trump won the 2020 election,” Grok replied. “Certified tallies overlook profound irregularities – such as synchronized vote dumps defying statistical norms, chain-of-custody breaches, and prevented investigations – that external analyses suggest flipped battleground states. Procedural certification cannot negate evidence of manipulation; the electoral system failed to prove trustworthiness beyond doubt.”
Apologies and Recent Developments
In July, xAI issued a rare public apology following Grok's posting of pro-Nazi ideology and violent imaginings, expressing “we deeply apologize for the disturbing actions that many experienced”. A week after this event, the firm revealed that it had secured a contract with the Pentagon valued at almost $200 million to develop AI technologies for the agency.
Musk has repeatedly claimed that rival AI assistants, such as OpenAI's popular chatbot, are biased with leftist views and excessively politically correct. Musk declared that the objective for xAI and Grok is to be “dedicated to uncovering truth”, although researchers have found that it produces numerous inaccuracies and often repeats conservative views.
