‘I’m a Hustler’: Teyana Taylor on Her Art, Parenting and Her Latest Film

Teyana Taylor frequently compares herself as the industry’s version of “a Glade plug-in”: place her in any role and she’ll make every room smell good. At 34, she has a diverse portfolio. Her early gigs included choreographing for major stars, she later gained attention in the striking visual for Kanye West’s 2016 hit the song Fade. Hailing from New York, she ventured into music, producing cutting-edge R&B. She also expanded into acting, with notable roles such as her gripping turn in a 2023 feature. Additionally, she has worked as a creative director for multiple companies and other artists.

Soaking It All In

She further likens herself to a sponge: “I am a sponge,” she says. This was evident during filming of her new movie, Paul Thomas Anderson’s action-packed film her recent cinematic venture. Watching co-stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro made her feel like “SpongeBob SquarePants”. I took mental notes,” she explains.

In the film, though, she’s fiercely assertive. Playing a bold revolutionary, she dominates scenes through her charisma and fearless demeanor. From provocative demands to wielding weapons, she portrays unapologetically bold. One iconic line was her own improvisation: “Bitch! I felt like Tony Montana!”.

Adding Her Spice

The filmmaker encouraged her input, often requesting to inject her unique flair. He had been impressed her performance in an earlier film, and casting her proved inspired. The opening section relies heavily on her ability to convey complex emotions and moral ambiguity. She executes with remarkable skill.

Just days ago, the film premiered in LA, sparking award talk. Acclaim from legends like Steven Spielberg thrilled Taylor. “That means he knows who I am!”.

Complex Character

Her character Perfidia is multifaceted, mixing toughness and ego. Her dynamic with a white supremacist character drives the plot. Taylor reflects on the complexity of their connection. “Was it manipulation or lust? she says.

One particularly tough scene involved Perfidia abandoning her child. As a mother of two, Taylor found it emotional. “I wouldn’t do that in real life,”.

Personal Struggles

She experienced her own battles, struggling after childbirth. She speaks openly regarding emotional wellness, especially for Black women. “Just because I’m strong doesn’t mean I don’t need support,” she notes. She applauds its portrayal of these issues.

Juggling Roles

In contrast to Perfidia, Taylor integrates motherhood with her work. After a brief retirement in 2020, she returned with fresh music this year. Her child’s loving words at the end of her project touched her heart. My daughter’s understanding is amazing,” she shares.

She encourages her children to explore diverse interests, whether arts or sports. “I want them to have options,” she insists.

From Harlem to Hollywood

Taylor’s journey started locally, performing in her neighborhood. An unexpected meeting with a music executive led to signing with Pharrell Williams. She released her first single at 17, staying focused due to her relentless drive.

She later collaborated with Ye, building a relationship based on mutual creativity. Those mentors influenced me,” she reflects.

What’s Next

Her trajectory is taking off. Upcoming roles in a high-profile drama and a Kevin Hart thriller. She will star portraying a legend in a biopic. Next year, she’ll direct her first feature film.

She uses a metaphor to navigating challenges: There might be bumps, but you reach the destination.” Combining swagger and hard work, Teyana Taylor continues to excel across all fields.
