Individual Taken into Custody Following No Fewer Than 50 Rounds Let Off from Sydney Home

A male suspect aged 60 was taken into custody after a shooting that injured at least one person, several persons wounded and multiple cars fired upon by a shooter in the Croydon Park area.

An estimated 100 bullets were fired across a span of two hours from 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM Sunday evening within the Croydon Park locality.

Authorities Initiate Large-Scale Response

Streets were closed and a lockdown was imposed on the area as police launched a major operation in response to information a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon in the direction of passing vehicles, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, travelling along Georges River Road.

Specialist police teams were summoned to detain an individual in his sixties from an apartment situated over a shop along the busy road.

Police Leadership Provide An Account

Superintendent Stephen Parry in an acting capacity stated to journalists late Sunday it was unclear exactly how many shots were fired “however, it's possible there were in the range of 50 to 100 bullets that were fired”.

Commissioner Describes Terrifying Incident

Commissioner Mal Lanyon of NSW Police stated officers' body cameras revealed how near police were to getting shot as they took cover throughout the "grave and frightening event".

“You can hear many shots, and clear strikes, not too far from the camera,” Lanyon told radio station 2GB in Sydney on Monday morning.

One of the officers shot at was a recent academy graduate for five weeks, Lanyon said.

Injuries and Consequences

Emergency medical personnel attended to 16 people on site suffering from minor wounds.

Several individuals were transported to the hospital after being treated by paramedics.

A taxi driver who is in his 50s remained in serious yet stable condition having sustained harm to his neck and head area.

Rare Occurrence for Sydney

It was a matter of luck that more people weren’t hurt, the acting assistant commissioner Trent King commented.

“Such an event is rare for Sydney to witness an occurrence of this kind, featuring a significant quantity of discharged rounds,” he told ABC radio on Monday morning.
“We’re very fortunate that further destruction was avoided and clearly further casualties or potentially deaths.”

King mentioned it likely was alarming for the community and the police who responded.

“It can be stated that the responding police came under gunfire. Our police cars have been damaged and we are extremely lucky that no officers sustained injuries.”

Suspect in Custody

The 60-year-old man was under police custody within a Bankstown medical facility and was slated for questioning and formally charged on Monday.

Guns, such as a large-caliber rifle, were taken into custody upon his detention, police alleged.

Witness Account

An individual who witnessed the shooting informed the ABC he was traveling nearby and “detected multiple banging sounds along the left side of the taxi”.

“Subsequently, I glanced beside me, and I noticed several holes on the passenger-side window,” he said.
“It escaped my notice there was actually a hole on the roof as well. And I smelled the gunpowder, though I thought because it was [NRL] grand final night, perhaps individuals were lighting firecrackers or the like.”
