Italy's star goalkeeper Donnarumma Claims Guardiola Can Enhance His Footwork
Gianluigi Donnarumma has stated his belief that working under Manchester City's manager will boost his skills with the ball at his feet. He also revealed that City had shown strong interest in signing him prior to the summer transfer window.
Surprise Move from PSG
The goalkeeper completed a move from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee of €35 million on deadline day. The transfer caused surprise due to perceptions that the shot-stopper is less accomplished with his feet compared to previous keepers like Ederson or recent acquisition James Trafford.
Responding to Critics
When asked about criticism regarding his distribution skills, he stated: “I am always striving to improve, and now I’m with a coach who is the best in these areas. He will guide me, and together we can achieve a lot.”
He continued, “Reading the game is key—sometimes you build from the back, and other times you need to clear it, especially in high-pressure situations.”
Confident in System
The keeper expressed certainty that the team's approach would work well with him between the posts. “Absolutely. Every game requires different preparation. The manager will get us ready in the optimal way,” he said.
A New Chapter
After winning the Champions League with PSG last season, he suffered a Club World Cup defeat to Chelsea in July. He disclosed, “I knew that City were very interested in me earlier this year. The interest strengthened after the tournament. Knowing that the manager was pushing for my signing motivated me.”
Looking Forward
Donnarumma preferred not to discuss past negotiations or claims from the French club. “I focus on the present. My goal was to come to this club—it was my first choice,” he stated.
Facing Napoli
The club are set to host Napoli in their Champions League first group game. The keeper, originating in the region, spent time at Napoli as a youth. His mother backs the Italian side. “My mum is torn—I'm hopeful she’ll support me,” he remarked.
Familiar Faces
Napoli, managed by Antonio Conte, are likely to include ex- United player Scott McTominay and loaned striker Rasmus Højlund. Additionally, the Belgian playmaker—formerly of City—is making a impressive beginning in Italy’s top flight with scoring twice in his first few games.
Guardiola praised De Bruyne’s settling-in: “Top players adapt rapidly. His ability is unmatched—awareness, distribution, and finishing. He's unique. It will be good to catching up after the match.”
