Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has announced he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state immediately.

He was scheduled to be among three contenders competing for the Irish presidency, alongside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, late Sunday he stated in a statement he had "made a mistake that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I've resolved to leave the presidential election contest right away and reunite with my loved ones," he said via a statement.
