Steven Gerrard in the running for Rangers reappointment after Russell Martin is dismissed.

The former Rangers boss is a leading candidate for a surprise reappointment to Rangers following the confirmed sacking of manager the ex-Swansea boss.

Martin's unfortunate spell at Rangers comes to a close

His ill-fated time at Rangers concluded with the boss departing the Falkirk's ground via a rear entrance and a waiting car after a level finish which left the Ibrox club 11 points from the top of the Scottish Premiership after just seven fixtures.

Incensed supporters had gathered around the squad transport in the stadium location, expressing their anger.

Ibrox directors unwilling to dismiss the manager

The club directors had been unwilling to part with Martin, who was only hired in the summer, despite loud protests from the fanbase.

However, there was an acknowledgement that the manager's job had become unsustainable.

The club have managed only one win of their league fixtures to date, which has been alongside dismal displays in European competition.

Overall, the coach won only five of 17 fixtures, with a passive, confused footballing philosophy that earned him few friends.

“Even though changeovers need patience, performances have failed to reach the organization's goals,” said a Rangers statement on Sunday night.

“Number two the assistant, and first-team staff member Williamson, will also be moving on. Russell and his coaching team have given their all throughout their tenure. We express gratitude for their dedication and send best wishes for the next chapter.”

The former manager claimed the league with the team

The Liverpool legend won the title with the Ibrox side in 2020-21, their lone triumph since 2011.

His achievements in the Scottish league before then, coupled with setbacks at Aston Villa, creates uncertainty about his managerial capabilities.

Yet he is highly regarded by the very fanbase Rangers desperately need back on side.

The reappointment of the Anfield legend, who previously worked in Saudi Arabia, would generate significant excitement.

The manager will also be aware of what few options he has to be a head coach in significant leagues.

Martin’s exit will intensify scrutiny on the sporting director

The manager's departure will heighten focus on Kevin Thelwell, the Ibrox director.

He had been very backing of the gaffer while publicly revealing a transfer outlay of twenty million pounds in the summer window.

The former boss had signed a long-term deal.

His previous experience

The manager, who had previously been in charge MK Dons and the Swans, led the south coast club to promotion to the top flight in that year after being appointed the prior offseason.

He was sacked last the end of the year after the Saints managed only one win of their first 16 games.

He was appointed Barry Ferguson’s next in line in June, after the interim head coach had replaced the dismissed Philippe Clement in winter.
