Substantial Internet Outage Impacts Many Sites and Applications

A widespread internet failure has impacted dozens sites and mobile apps around the world, as users experiencing issues accessing the internet following issues at the online infrastructure service.

The affected services encompass Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-operated platforms like its primary shopping platform and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and also reports of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs site on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, several Ring customers used online platforms to complain their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific platforms reached the thousands for every service.

The company stated that the issue started in the eastern region of the US at Amazon Web Services, a unit that provides crucial online framework for numerous companies, who rent out space on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “higher problem frequencies and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the east coast of the US. The widespread consequence appeared to disrupt apps around the world, with the Downdetector site showing issues with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on internet outages, also reported a surge in problems on Monday morning, with many of them situated in Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the issues began.
