Waymo's Driverless Taxis Set to Arrive London Streets Starting 2026.

American company Waymo has revealed that its self-driving cabs will be operational for use on London's thoroughfares starting next year.

UK Capital Named as First European City for Self-Driving Cab Service.

London will emerge as the pioneering European city to host an autonomous taxi service, comparable with those currently operational in San Francisco and four other American locations utilizing Waymo's innovative technology.

Initial Operations to Commence with Human Specialists.

Waymo announced that its vehicles are currently traveling to London and will start navigating on the city's streets in the near future with safety drivers in control.

The company – initially established as a offshoot from the tech giant's self-driving car initiative and part of the Alphabet family – indicated it would scale up activities and work closely with the Department for Transport and Transport for London to secure the necessary approvals to provide totally self-driving services by 2026.

Comprehensive Rollout Expected After Automated Vehicles Act Comes into Force.

A more extensive rollout of driverless cabs is projected in the UK after the new law fully takes effect in late 2027.

Waymo's Current Connections in the UK and Beyond.

Waymo currently has connections to Britain after establishing its first European engineering hub in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also starting operations in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover eco-friendly cars, marking its only other present venture beyond the United States.

“Evidence confirms how to safely expand fully autonomous transport solutions, and we are eager to bring the advantages of our technology to the UK,” said the company executive, adding that the technology was “making roads safer and travel more accessible”.

Proven History in the US.

Waymo launched its autonomous vehicles in 2020 and now reports it has transported over 10 million riders in the US.

Regardless of some concerning occurrences, Waymo indicated that evidence showed that vehicles operated by people were associated with accidents that injured pedestrians at a much higher rate than its autonomous fleet.
